Stress Engineer

Vertical Aerospace is building technology to revolutionise how people fly. Our mission is to make air travel personal, on-demand and carbon-free.

We're looking for an outstanding Stress Engineer who can develop the structure for a new type of aircraft, from the ground up.

You'll have a fundamental knowledge of aircraft structures and be able to effectively analyse all major components from a Stress and Fatigue & Damage Tolerant perspective for both metallic and composite structures.

Responsibilities

Your duties will be wide ranging and varied and will include:

  • Independently plan, schedule and perform detailed structural simulations on aircraft structures and systems
  • Prepare presentations, and document results in technical reports
  • Development of structural proposals and definitions to aerospace standards
  • Support the development of new methods and processes for the stress team
  • Support the demonstration of Means of Compliance standards required by the authorities
  • Work closely with the design engineers to generate alternate proposals and support structural optimisation

Basic Qualifications / Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • Experience in the analysis of lightweight composite structures
  • Good fundamental knowledge of Aircraft Structures and Systems
  • Thorough understanding of engineering 1st principles and ability to perform hand calculations to sense check
  • Detailed understanding of static structural analysis and finite element methods with experience of orthotropic materials
  • Experience of performing low and high cycle fatigue analysis
  • Experience and proficiency of at least one modern FEM package (ANSYS Workbench preferred)

Preferred Qualifications/Experience

  • Experience of dynamic analysis with a good knowledge of rotordynamics and aeroeleastics
  • A basic knowledge of a modern programming language
  • Experience and proficiency of at least one current CAD package (Solidworks preferred)
  • Masters or PhD in Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent
  • Experience in communicating with senior management, as well as technical and business teams to collect requirements, describe product features and technical designs
  • Hold Signatory to DOA aviation levels
  • Experience of certifying to aerospace standards
